The Great British Summer

It’s been an interesting and varied summer for me so far, being stuck (mostly) in the UK. I did manage a brief trip out to France for a sneaky few days of fun on some swollen alpine rivers. But aside from that brief sojourn, I have been getting my summer paddling fix here in Britain. Apart from one or two summer storms topping the rivers up and playboating missions to the Dee, this has generally meant trying a few different areas of paddlesport, from sea kayaking to open boat touring, via polo, and of course sessions in my beloved squirt boat.

I do have to admit to feeling at leas the tiniest bit jealous when hearing constant reports of friend’s whitewater adventures in India, Norway, Nepal, France etc…., but I can hardly complain when there is so much fun and adventure to be had right here I’m constantly amazed by the diversity of paddlesport and the places that it can take us. Coming up, I’m looking forward to the sinking at the Annual Nottingham Squirtfest, playing polo at the London international, and of course coaching and partying at PYRANHA FEST. Not bad for a quiet summer…

Talking of summer fun, every British whitewater paddler is aware of Holme Peirpont and it’s importance as a training and competition venue for all whitewater disciplines, from recreational paddling and rafting, through to international slalom, wildwater racing, and freestyle events. However, most won’t be aware of the planned course changes from BCU World Class Performance, this is because it has been kept very quiet and the course users; paddlers and rafters, haven’t been consulted.

I believe that the operation of the Holme Peirpont whitewater course is important to all paddlesport in the UK, as such am very keen to see that any developments or changes are carried out so as to benefit all users. If changes are made without this consultation, then the use of the course for many user groups could be in jeopardy. For example, this year’s National Student Rodeo, held at the course, was the largest freestyle kayaking event ever held worldwide, with over 800 competitors. Events like this will be in danger if the course is changed so as to be less suited to freestyle kayaking.
